The project, named “Research and Development of the Metallurgical Production Process Online Component Analysis Technology Based on Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Method”, under the National High-tech R&D Program of China (the 863 Program), has recently got technical acceptance by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People’s Republic of China . It was undertaken by Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Currently, the metallurgical industry in China is short of effective in-situ and online analysis technology, causing enormous waste of energy. In view of this situation, researchers at SIA conducted the project. Real-time and online monitoring of the molten metals’ components can be achieved by applying the internationally leading LIBS technology. The system can also direct the production process in real time, cutting short the time of analysis and inspection. Eventually, it can enhance productivity of enterprises and lower energy consumption. The technology has been put into demonstration applications at metallurgical production lines in several enterprises currently, and is well received by the clients.
