Biography:
Dr. Yang Gao, B.Eng (1st Hon), PhD, SMIEEE, is an Associate Professor in Surrey Space Centre (SSC) of the University of Surrey in the UK and heads the Autonomy & AI Research Group currently consisting of ten postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Dr. Gao has been a principle investigator (PI), co-investigator (co-I), technical lead and project manager of over ten internationally teamed R&D projects funded by European Commission (EU), European Space Agency (ESA), British research councils and royal academies as well as space industrial companies such as EADS Astrium and SSTL. Dr. Gao have co-authored one book, five book chapters, seventy internationally refereed journal and proceeding papers. Dr. Gao also leads Surrey’s involvement in various international space mission designs such as ExoMars, MoonLITE, Moonraker, LunarEX/NET and Marco Polo-R and actively promotes theSurrey 'low-cost'space engineering approach. In 2008, Dr. Gao was named by Times Higher Education as one of ten young leading academics in the UK who are making a very significant contribution to their disciplines. Prior to joining SSC in 2004, Dr. Gao had been an awardee of the prestigious Singapore Millennium Foundation Fellowship and worked on intelligent control of autonomous vehicles. She gained the B.Eng (First Class Honors) degree and Ph.D degree from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2000 and 2003 respectively.
