Abstract:

XiaoQi Chen is Professor and Director for Mechatronics Engineering Programme at the University of Canterbury. He graduated from South China University of Technology with BEng in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. He was a recipient of China-UK Technical Co-Operation Award for his MSc study in Materials Technology, Brunel University (1985 – 1986); and PhD study in Electrical Engineering, the University of Liverpool (1986 – 1989). He was awarded Singapore National Technology Award in 1999.

Dr. Chen is Senior Member of IEEE, Senior Member of SME, Member of ASME, Member of IFAC TC9.4 Control Education Committee, founding Chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation New Zealand Chapter, and founding President for New Zealand – China Society of Science and Technology. He has been Associate Editor and/or Member of Organising Committee for many international conferences including IEEE CASE, IEEE ICRA, IEEE SMC, ASME DETC, and IFAC World Congress. Prof. Chen is Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering,Control and Intelligent Systems, and International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems.

Dr Chen’s research interests cover bio-mechatronics, mobile robotics, assistive device and technology. He has authored and co-authored over 150 referred conference and journal papers, and edited two books; and is inventor of 6 patents.
