Title:

Wearable Computing and Its Application in Human Robot Interaction

Abstract

As robots are getting closer to humans, one important research problem that has attracted much attention recently is how humans should interact with the robots, or the human robot interaction (HRI) problem.  It is highly desired that such interactions should be natural and human-oriented, in a way similar to human-pet or human-human interactions. On the other hand, thanks to the rapid progress in MEMS and VLSI technologies, wearable computing has great potentials to be used in many human-centered computing applications. In this talk, Dr. Sheng will present his recent research in the area crosscutting wearable computing and robotics.  The focus of his research is to use the state-of-the-art wearable sensors and computers to understand human activities, gestures and minds, which can help develop more natural human robot interactions.

Weihua Sheng is an assistant professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Oklahoma State University (OSU), USA. He is the Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Sensing, Computation and Control (http://ascc.okstate.edu) at OSU.  Dr. Sheng received his Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Michigan State University in May 2002. He obtained his M.S and B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China in 1997 and 1994, respectively. During 2002-2006, he taught in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Kettering University (formerly General Motor Institute). He was promoted to associate professor there before he joined Oklahoma State University.  He is the author of one US patent and more than 70 papers in major journals and international conferences. His current research interests include wearable computing, human robot interaction, distributed mobile robotics, etc. His research has been supported by National Science Foundation (NSF) , Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Transportation (DoT), etc.  Dr. Sheng is a senior member of IEEE and currently serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering.
