Abstract:
Dr. John C. Wiltshire graduated in 1976 with a B.S. in geology from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He worked as an exploration geologist in the oil and mining industries for Noranda Mines, Chevron and Petro-Canada. Dr. Wiltshire earned a Ph.D. in Geological Oceanography from the University of Hawaii in 1983. He then became the Ocean Resources Manager for the State of Hawaii. In 1986, he joined the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) as a senior researcher running deep submergence operations. He is now Director of HURL, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Undersea Research Center for Hawaii and the Western Pacific . He is also Chairman of the University of Hawaii's Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering. Dr. Wiltshire is an advisor to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior on offshore oil, gas and minerals leasing as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Policy Advisory Committee. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the peer reviewed journal Marine Georesources and Geotechnology. He teaches several courses at the University of Hawaii in the areas of energy and mineral resources. He is a fellow of the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and general chairman of the 2000 person MTS Oceans conference in 2001 and again for 2011. He is the author of over 90 scientific papers on ocean and energy resources, mineral economics, scientific submersible utilization, energy policy and sustainable development in the minerals industry.
