Upon the invitation of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Department, Cui Junhong, professor from the University of Connecticut in the United States visited Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on October 22nd, 2013.

During the visit, Cui made a report named Revolutionizing the Water World: Smart Ocean Technology. In the report, she introduced the concept of smart ocean technology from the perspectives of potential application and demand, general system structure and major research fields. She also explained in detail the five key technologies concerning the smart ocean technology, including communication, energy, sensing, platform and cyber-control. After the report, Yu Haibin, director of SIA awarded the certificate of Robot Frontier Academic Forum to Cui.

Later, Cui discussed with researchers from the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Department on potential cooperative issues. Both sides agreed on the combination of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and network technology.

As a professor in Computer Science and Engineering, Cui now serves as the director of NSF I/USRC on Smart Ocean Technology, School of Engineering in the University of Connecticut. Her research interests mainly include spatial attribute modeling of network topology, network mobility and network members, as well as high-performance communication technology of overlay networks and peer-to-peer networks, etc. The Underwater Sensor Network (UWSN) Laboratory in the University of Connecticut, which was established by Cui, has now become a well-known research institute of underwater communication, underwater network and systems internationally.
