Professor Reza Moheimani from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Newcastle, Australia, visited Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on August 27, 2012, giving a report named “High-speed Controlled Motion at Extreme Resolutions”.

The report revolved around the latest research progress of ultra-precision motion control. Prof. Moheimani discussed the significance of piezoelectric sensors and drivers against the background of high-speed atomic force microscopy application, and proposed a method of improving the performance of piezoelectric sensors and drivers through proper integration of good mechanical design, interface electronics and advanced control systems In addition, other applications such as on-chip atomic force microscopy based on microfluidic systems were also discussed.

As a well-known expert in the field of nanosystems control in the world, Prof. Moheimani is the founder of the Laboratory for Dynamics and Control of Nanosystems in the University of Newcastle. He has achieved many innovative research progresses in the fields of control technology for nano-scale systems and dynamics, including the control and estimation of nanopositioning system in high-speed scanning probe microscopy, the control of microactuators in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), the control and modeling of micro-cantilever, and ultrahigh-density storage system control based on probe.

Prof. Moheimani serves as the chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronic Systems, and is also a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) centre of Excellence for Complex Dynamic Systems and Control, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK). He received the 2007 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award and the 2009 IEEE Control Systems Technology Award.

In addition, Prof. Moheimani is a fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP), a fellow of IEEE and a fellow of IFAC. He has served on the editorial board of a number of journals including the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics and Control Engineering Practice. He has served as chairman at several international conferences and workshops. (Dai Tianjiao)
