The 2025 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2025) was recently held in Hangzhou. The conference attracted over 8,000 attendees and received more than 5,000 paper submissions from research institutions across numerous countries. honored with the conference's sole Best Conference Paper Award. A paper titled Interdigitated Electrodes for Selective Stimulation of Skeletal Muscle Actuators in Bio-syncretic Robots from Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) won the only Best Conference Paper Award.
The paper was authored by Lianchao Yang, a Ph.D. candidate from the Micro-Nano Robotics research group in the Robotics Laborotary of SIA and his colleagues. The research team focused on developing selective and synergistic biomimetic stimulation methods for actuation units in bio-syncretic robots. By utilizing optimized thin-film interdigitated electrodes, they achieved high spatial resolution activation of skeletal muscle actuators. This work provides a novel control strategy for bio-syncretic robots whose motion relies on the coordinated drive of multiple muscle units.
IEEE IROS is one of the most influential international academic conferences in the field of robotics. Having been held for 37 years, it aims to promote the development and application of intelligent robots and systems. IEEE IROS 2025 accepted multiple papers from SIA, showcasing the institute's latest advancements in areas like bio-syncretic robots and bionic robotics.
