The 8th Korea-China Joint Workshop on Marine Robotics was held in Seoul, South Korea, from March 19 to 21, 2025.

This event was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) under their international cooperation program. Over 40 participants attended the workshop, including representatives from the Ocean University of China, Dalian Maritime University, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and the Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Meanwhile, Korean institutions such as the Korea Institute of Unmanned Systems, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), Korea Institute of Robotics & Technology Convergence (KIRO), Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), Chungnam National University (CNU), and Chosun University.

Dr. Young Seon Moon, President of the Korea Institute of Unmanned Systems (on-site), and Zelin Shi, Director of the Shenyang Institute of Automation delivered opening remarks.

Twelve experts from China and Korea were invited to deliver keynote speeches, focusing on topics such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), underwater gliders (Ugs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and technologies such as underwater vision, environmental perception, and intelligent operation.

Shuxue Yan, a researcher from the Underwater Robotics Laboratory at the SIA , presented Extreme Environment Underwater Robot Development and Application Progress, including an introduction to the Wenhai-1 6000-meter ARV and the Tansuo 200 AUV.

During the workshop, potential collaborations were discuessed, including project collaboration, shared research voyages, personnel exchanges, and student training programs.

The Korea-China Joint Workshop on Marine Robotics was jointly established in 2015 by SIA, KIRO, and KIOST. This year marks its 10th anniversary. The workshop is held alternatively by institutes from China and South Korea annually. The worshop of 2026 is expected to be host by the Ocean University of China in Qingdao.
