Yu Haibin, director of Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), received the Excellence in Technical Innovation Award at International Society of Automation (ISA) Annual Gala on September 24, 2016. Yu received the award for outstanding technical contributions towards the development and standardization of industrial Wireless Standards for Factory Automation (WIA-FA).
ISA's Honors & Awards Gala, now in its 54th year, is an annual event honoring individuals for the contributions to and advancement of automation across all industries. The Excellence in Technical Innovation Award recognizes an individual who has played a critical role in the conception, design, and/or implementation of an innovation product, process, and/or service.
Yu played a leading role in the development of WIA-FA. The research started in 2011, aiming at solving the tough issues such as high routing and maintenance cost, low mobility and flexibility, faced by factory automation. Researchers conquered challenges of high concurrency,anti-jamming and hard real-time, developed technologies including highly accurate time synchronization、frequency domain polling based on OFDM、dynamic TDMA accessing based on channel sensing、multimodal reliable retransmission, and established an industrial automation system based on WIA-FA. WIA-FA became Publicly Available Specification (PAS) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and a National standard of China in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
Founded in 1945, ISA is a leading, global, nonprofit organization that is setting the standard for automation by helping over 30,000 worldwide members and other professionals solve difficult technical problems, while enhancing their leadership and personal career capabilities. Based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, ISA develops standards; certifies industry professionals; provides education and training; publishes books and technical articles; and hosts conferences and exhibitions for automation professionals.
