Upon the invitation of Marine Technology Equipment Department, Wang Yong and Shao Lisheng, both researchers from Sanya Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering (SIDSSE), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) made reports on the Hadal Trench Life Science seminar in Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) on March 14th, 2014.
Hadal trenches refer to the trench areas with a depth of more than 6,000 meters. Despite the fact that Hadal trenches take up about one or two percent of the global sea area, they represent 45% of the depth range of sea bottom and play a very important role in ocean ecological system. Over the past half a century, researchers have taken the first steps to find out distinctive life, environment and geology in Hadal trenches. Research shows that, large amount of bizarre creatures inhabit in the trench environment and demonstrate evident region specificity, which is contrary to the initial conception that Hadal trenches lack in creatures.
Wang Yong delivered a report, named Structure and chemo metabolic method of microbial community in Hadal trenches. In his report, Wang talked about the possible structure of Hadal trench ecological system and the opportunity of tracking the origin of life through researches on hadal trench creatures, based on the ecological system of ocean surface, as well as the step structure and formation mechanism of deep-sea hydrothermal ecological system. He also proposed demands for detection and sampling equipment applied in hadal trench microbial researches. He Lisheng elaborated the demands for deep-sea detection and sampling equipment and technology applied in the researches on hadal trenches macro creatures. Wang and He were both recruited by the Hundred Talents Program of SIDSSE, CAS.
