Invited by the Marine Technology Equipment Department, Professor Xu Zhengyuan from Tsinghua University visited Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on August 30th, 2013, giving a report named Opportunities and Challenges in Wide Spectral Optical Wireless Communications.
In the report, Xu introduced the research progress made by his research team in the field of optical wireless communications as well as its prospect. After the report, Xu made discussions with researchers from the Marine Technology Equipment Department about the feasibility and outlook of underwater optical wireless communications technology, and talked about jointly conducting research on underwater optical wireless communication technology and its applications. The technology would provide a high speed data transmission line for marine technology equipment and realize rapid real-time interaction between data and information, in order to enhance the real-time control capability of marine technology equipment and widen its application areas.
Xu currently serves as the director of Optical Wireless Information Systems Laboratory of Tsinghua University. He is also a “CAS Thousand Talents Program” expert as well as the chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program). He once won overseas distinguished young scientist fund support, and was honored “scientist of the year” by Scientific Chinese magazine, the Chinese equivalent of Scientific American in 2011. The main research areas of Xu include three-dimensional wide optical wireless communications and networks, wireless opto-electronic heterogeneous system, intelligent transportation and internet of things, etc.
