The “Ke Xue Yi Hao” research ship came back to Qingdao port, in China’s Shandong Province on August 4 after 31 days’ mission in the Western Pacific, bringing back the successful sea test of the underwater glider developed and manufactured by Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA).
The glider accomplished deep-sea observation test in an area with a depth of more than 4,000 meters. On the observation position in Western Pacific, it has finished several gliding observation missions successively, with a highest diving depth of 837 meters. The underwater glider was successfully recovered after it completed these observation missions.
It is the first time for the underwater glider, independently developed and manufactured by China, to accomplish deep-sea observation test. While bringing back precious scientific data, the test also lays down a profound foundation for the gilder’s future development and application.
According to the Chief Scientist Prof. Yuan Dongliang of Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, this sea test signifies that China’s underwater glider technology has reached a mature level.
